Futures Paradise

They’ve been spending most their lives
Living in a future paradise
They’ve been spending most their lives
Living in a future paradise
They’ve been looking in their minds
For the day that sorrows gone from time
They keep telling of the day
When the Savior of love will come to stay

Tell me who of them will come to be
How many of them are you and me

-Stevie Wonder Pastime Paradise

So I have been listening to this song on repeat for the last couple of days as it is an earworm that just won’t let go. I really like the song and while I am not the biggest Stevie Wonder fan I think it is worth a listen to. I posted the chorus and bridge because I think it is telling of the mentality many of us have. The future will be our paradise, all our pain will leave us in the future, things will be better. This is not to say this way of thinking is right or wrong but more importantly how many of us think this way. A friend once told me that part of the American dream many people share is that those who do not like their standing in life are not poor but are millionaire down on their luck. The future holds promise for many, Stevie knew this in 1976 and composed a song capturing the vision of better days ahead. I think it is brilliant! Let’s not forget to remind ourselves that we must avoid living in a pastime paradise and a future paradise but we should focus on a present paradise.
